A county of pianos

Suffolk has more instruments in unusual situations than almost anywhere we serve

Suffolk holds a particular kind of piano. It sits in the drawing room of a Georgian farmhouse on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds, or in the front parlour of a flint cottage in one of the Lavenham villages, or in a proper music room in a Long Melford estate house that now needs three builders through it for six months. Sometimes it belongs to an executor settling a will on behalf of a parent who spent forty years in the same Stowmarket semi. Sometimes it has been sitting in the corner of a rented cottage in Aldeburgh since a musician let the place out and meant to come back for it.

Whatever the route, those instruments arrive at the same point: they need to go somewhere genuinely safe while life sorts itself out. That is what we do, and Suffolk is a county we know well. Our crew collects every Tuesday across the IP postcode area, from the edge of Bury St Edmunds in the west to the coast road through Felixstowe and Aldeburgh in the east, taking in Stowmarket, Sudbury, Hadleigh, Haverhill, Newmarket and the hundreds of villages in between.

Bury St Edmunds

The county town and the villages around it

Bury St Edmunds sits at the heart of West Suffolk, and it sends us more enquiries than anywhere else in the county. Georgian town houses on Churchgate Street and Northgate Street, the newer estates out toward Westley and Moreton Hall, the villages immediately around: Horringer, Great Barton, Rougham, Thurston, Woolpit. These properties often hold pianos that predate the current owners by a generation or two, and when the house is sold, extended or cleared as part of an estate, the piano needs to go somewhere before the sale completes or the builders move in.

The A14 corridor between Bury and Ipswich runs through a belt of prosperous Suffolk villages, and the houses either side of it tend to be large and old. Many have been in the same family for decades. We know the access patterns well enough to know that the hallway in an Edwardian semi in Bury differs from the flagstone entrance hall in a Lavenham timber-framed house, and that both differ again from a modern house on the Tollgate development. Each one gets the same unhurried specialist attention.

Collection day

Tuesday across the IP postcodes

We collect across Suffolk on Tuesdays. A single recurring day keeps the route tight and the price consistent for every customer in the county. We confirm a three-hour target window the evening before, so you know when to expect the crew without clearing your whole diary.

If the piano is up a staircase, stair access is assessed and priced clearly in the online booking before you confirm anything. The figure is there to read before you pay a penny. If Tuesday genuinely cannot work, an off-day collection can be arranged for an added charge, and we will price that for you when you enquire.

Old buildings and damp

Why Suffolk properties are particularly hard on a piano left in place

Suffolk is a county of old buildings. Flint, timber frame, lime plaster, single glazing: the materials keep the character but they do not keep a piano stable. In winter these rooms cycle between cold and warm depending on whether anyone is living in them. Damp is a background presence in much of the older stock, particularly in properties that have been emptied between tenancies or left unheated while an estate is settled.

A piano absorbs those conditions slowly. The soundboard swells and shrinks. Tuning pins work loose in a damp pin block. The action stiffens, or conversely, glue joints in the hammer rail start to fail in excessive dryness. None of this is dramatic, but it is cumulative, and it tends to show up after the piano has been in the wrong conditions for a year rather than a month.

Our facility in Oxfordshire holds a steady temperature and humidity throughout the year, maintained specifically for instrument storage. Full insurance covers every piano from the moment our crew arrives to collect it, through every week it is in store, until we bring it back. Security monitoring runs around the clock with no public access to the storage area.

What we store

Questions

Do you collect from Bury St Edmunds?

Yes. Bury St Edmunds is in our regular Tuesday run. We collect from town centre properties, the surrounding villages and estates, and anywhere else in the IP postcodes. Stair access is assessed and priced in the online booking before you confirm.

Which areas of Suffolk do you cover?

We cover the full IP postcode area on Tuesdays. That includes Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich, Stowmarket, Sudbury, Haverhill, Newmarket, Woodbridge, Felixstowe, Aldeburgh, Saxmundham, Framlingham, Eye, Leiston, Clare, Hadleigh and the villages across mid-Suffolk and West Suffolk.

We are settling an estate in Suffolk and there is a piano to deal with. Can you help?

Yes. Estate and probate collections are a regular part of our work across Suffolk. You do not need to be at the property. Give us the access details when you book and we will collect the piano, wrap it carefully, and hold it in climate-controlled storage until the family or solicitors decide where it should go next. Re-delivery is to any address across GB mainland and Belfast.

The piano is in a period farmhouse with a narrow hallway. Is that a problem?

No. Narrow hallways, low ceilings, stone floors and difficult staircases are standard territory for our specialist piano crews. We assess the access when you book and price any stair work clearly before you confirm, so there is nothing unexpected on collection day.

Is there a minimum storage period?

No. You pay for the weeks the piano is with us and arrange re-delivery when you are ready. A few weeks between a completion and a move-in works the same way as a year-long period during a probate or renovation.

Is the piano insured while it is in storage?

Yes. Full insurance covers the instrument from the moment our crew collects it, through every week in our climate-controlled facility, and until we return it. The store is monitored around the clock.
