City and community

Cardiff pianos go into storage for all sorts of reasons

Cardiff's housing stock is largely Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses. They are well-loved properties in areas like Roath, Pontcanna, Canton and Cathays, but narrow hallways and steep staircases mean a piano that once sat perfectly in a front room becomes genuinely awkward when a family renovates, downsizes or moves on. Our specialist piano crews collect from all of these streets regularly and know exactly what to expect.

The city also has a rich musical life. The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama generates a steady need for short and long-term storage between academic years. Cardiff has a professional orchestra and an opera company, and working musicians often need a secure, climate-controlled home for an instrument between projects or seasons.

Fridays across the CF postcodes

Our Cardiff collections run on Fridays. The CF postcode area covers central Cardiff, Cardiff Bay, Pontcanna, Roath, Canton, Llandaff, Whitchurch, Penarth and the surrounding towns and villages including Caerphilly and the Bridgend fringes. We confirm a three-hour target window the day before, so you are not waiting around all morning.

If a Friday genuinely does not suit, an off-day collection can be arranged for an added charge. Any stairs, whether in a terraced house, a student flat or a college building, are priced clearly in the online booking before you confirm anything.

Why climate control matters here

South Wales weather is harder on a piano than most people realise

Cardiff has a mild but notably damp climate, and older properties, particularly those near the Bay or on low-lying ground, can hold a good deal of ambient moisture. Sustained humidity causes soundboards to swell and crack, glue joints to soften, and keys to stick or chip. A piano left in an unheated room through a Welsh winter often comes back to its owner noticeably worse than it left.

Our facility holds steady temperature and humidity year-round, with full insurance cover from the moment of collection and round-the-clock monitored security. A few weeks, a full academic year, or a longer period all leave the instrument in exactly the condition it arrived.

Questions

Which parts of Cardiff do you collect from?

We collect across the CF postcode area, including central Cardiff, Cardiff Bay, Pontcanna, Roath, Canton, Llandaff, Whitchurch, Penarth and surrounding towns. Our specialist piano crews are familiar with the terraced streets and older properties common across these areas.

Which day do you collect in Cardiff?

Cardiff collections run on Fridays. We confirm a three-hour target window the evening before. If Friday does not suit, an off-day collection can be arranged for an added charge.

Can RWCMD students and staff use the service?

Yes. Students and staff at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama use the service regularly, especially over the summer or between academic years. There is no minimum term, so storage for a single vacation or a full year both work the same way.

How are stairs handled at Cardiff properties?

Stairs are priced clearly in the online booking, so you see the cost before confirming. Our specialist piano crews are used to the steep staircases in Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses across Cardiff, and they work carefully to avoid any contact with walls or banisters.

Is my piano insured while it is in storage?

Yes. Your instrument is fully insured from the moment our crew collects it, through every week in the climate-controlled facility, to re-delivery. The facility is monitored around the clock.

Is there a minimum storage period?

No. Storage runs week by week. Collection and the first four weeks are paid at booking, then billing continues in four-week cycles. You request re-delivery whenever you are ready, and we arrange it from there.
