Exeter and the surrounding Devon countryside hold more pianos than you might expect. A cathedral city with a sizeable university, a spread of prep schools and independent music teachers, Victorian and Georgian terraces in St Thomas and Heavitree, and a wide ring of villages and rural properties stretching out toward Crediton, Tiverton and Okehampton. When a family renovates, an academic goes on sabbatical, an estate needs clearing, or a Devon farmhouse is sold, the instrument needs somewhere safe.
The access challenges here are specific to the region. Old city-centre properties have steep internal stairs and front doors that barely admit a dining chair, let alone a grand. Rural properties can sit at the end of long tracks with low barns and stone outbuildings. Our specialist piano crews are experienced in both, and they assess the access fully before anything moves.

Collection day
We collect from Exeter and the EX area on Fridays. A dedicated weekly day keeps the route consistent and the cost fair. We confirm a three-hour target window the day before, so you are not left wondering all morning. If a Friday genuinely will not work, an off-day collection can be arranged for an added charge.
Stair access, long-carry distances and difficult rural approaches are all priced transparently in the online booking before you confirm. There are no surprises on the day, and our crews are used to working at Devon pace.
Why climate control matters in Devon
Devon sits in a high-humidity belt. Moist south-westerly air moves in off the channel and settles into stone walls, plaster ceilings and unheated rooms with particular persistence. A piano left in a Devon cottage through autumn and winter will absorb that moisture into its soundboard, swelling the wood and shifting the tuning. Actions become sluggish, pins work loose in their blocks, and the cabinet can bubble or crack when the heating comes back on in spring.
Our facility holds a steady temperature and relative humidity all year. The instrument is stored in the same conditions whether it sits with us for three weeks or three years. It is fully insured from the moment our crew lifts it at your address through every day in storage to re-delivery. The site is monitored around the clock with no public access.
For families in coastal Devon towns like Exmouth, Sidmouth and Dawlish, where the marine air is strongest, that steady environment makes a measurable difference to how the piano comes back to you.
Area coverage
We collect across central Exeter and all the surrounding EX postcodes. That covers Exmouth and the coastal strip to the south-east, Teignmouth and Dawlish to the south, Crediton and Okehampton to the west, Tiverton and Cullompton to the north, and Sidmouth, Honiton and Axminster to the east. The EX postcode area is large and rural, and we cover it fully on the Friday run.
For University of Exeter collections, whether from a student house, a faculty room or university-owned accommodation, we work to whatever access arrangements you give us when booking.
What we take in
We store upright pianos, baby grands, grands and concert grands alongside digital pianos, stage pianos and keyboards. Associated equipment such as stools, pedal units and custom covers can travel in the same booking. If you have a specific instrument or an unusual access situation, contact us before booking and we will confirm.
Pricing for Exeter
Prices include collection, climate-controlled storage and full insurance. Stairs without a lift and off-day collections are priced transparently in the booking. Re-delivery is quoted when you are ready for the piano back.
