Downsizing is often a decision made on finances, on life stage, or on the simple realisation that a large family home has become more house than you need. What downsizing rarely accounts for is the piano. A four-bedroom house accommodated it naturally. A one-bedroom flat, or a small terrace, often does not.

The piano may be in good condition, may be one you have played for decades, or may be an instrument you are not ready to sell. A studio flat has no space for an upright, a smaller property may not withstand the weight of a baby grand, and many leasehold buildings have noise clauses that make having a piano impractical anyway. Storage is the decision that keeps your options open.

Why a standard self-storage unit is not suitable

Self-storage units are designed for furniture, boxes and domestic clutter. They are not climate-controlled in the way a piano requires. The temperature and humidity inside a standard unit follows the weather outside, which means the instrument absorbs summer damp, winter dry air and the sharp swings between them. Wood and felt respond to those shifts, and a piano left in a general unit for more than a few weeks will deteriorate in ways that are not always obvious until you open the lid.

The soundboard is a large, thin panel of spruce under tension. The action has hundreds of moving parts made from wood, felt and leather. The pinblock holds tuning pins by friction alone. All of those components react to humidity and temperature changes in ways that accumulate silently, with no visible warning until the damage is done. A general-purpose unit, however secure it may be, cannot protect those materials over a storage period of any length.

Timing collection around your move

Most people arranging storage during a downsize want to know whether collection should happen before or after completion. If you decide to pass the instrument on, it can be collected from the facility by a buyer or a dealer. The decision does not have to be made on moving day.
