What temperature and humidity should a piano be stored at
Temperature and humidity have a specific job inside a piano: they determine whether the wood, felt and glue that make the instrument work stay stable or begin to fail. Most piano owners know that storage conditions matter, but the precise targets, and the reasons why each end of the range causes a different type of harm, are less well understood. The instrument inside the case is made of materials that move with moisture, and each one has a range it tolerates well and a range where the damage starts.
The numbers to aim for
Piano technicians and manufacturers generally agree on a target of around 15 to 21 degrees Celsius for temperature, with 18 degrees being the most widely cited ideal. Humidity should sit between 45 and 55 percent relative humidity, with 50 percent being the midpoint that most manufacturers design around. These are not arbitrary figures. They reflect the conditions under which the timber, felt and hide glue in a piano behave predictably and age well.
The most important word is steady. A piano held at a consistent 16 degrees and 48 percent relative humidity will fare better over time than one that swings between correct and incorrect conditions week on week. The cycling between states puts more mechanical stress on every component than any single imperfect level does.
What dry conditions do to a piano
When relative humidity drops below about 40 percent, the soundboard begins to shrink. This is the large panel of spruce that runs the full length of the piano's back and transmits vibration from the strings through the entire instrument. As it shrinks, its crown, the slight outward bow that contributes to the piano's projection and sustain, flattens and the pitch falls. Below around 35 percent, the risk of the board cracking along the grain becomes serious.

Central heating is the most common cause of low humidity damage in UK homes. A room at a comfortable 20 degrees in winter can have relative humidity as low as 25 to 30 percent after the heating has been running through the day. The piano dries slowly and the effect accumulates unnoticed.
What damp conditions do
Above around 65 percent relative humidity, the problems reverse direction entirely. The soundboard swells and pushes upwards, raising the pitch and placing extra stress on the bridges. Timber throughout the case absorbs moisture and expands, producing sticking keys, swollen action parts and a touch that is heavy and inconsistent. In prolonged high humidity, mould can develop on the felt, leather and timber surfaces inside the cabinet, and rust forms on strings and tuning pins.

Garages and outbuildings are the most common environment for this kind of damage. They shelter the instrument from direct weather but provide no humidity control, so the air inside follows the outdoor season. A closed garage can sit above 70 percent relative humidity in a warm, wet summer. A piano left there goes through the full seasonal swing, absorbing and releasing moisture across every month of the year.
Why the cycling matters more than the level
A piano in conditions that are consistently slightly dry, say 38 to 40 percent in a heated flat, will age in a predictable way and a good technician can manage its tuning and maintenance accordingly. The same instrument swinging between 30 and 65 percent across the seasons will accumulate mechanical stress that no amount of servicing can undo.
Every swing forces the soundboard to bow one way and then the other. Every swing flexes the hide glue joints in two directions. Over years, this produces the cracked boards, the lifted bridges and the dead notes that account for most of the serious damage we see when instruments arrive at our facility after a long period in an uncontrolled environment.
