Going to university solves a lot of things and creates a handful of practical ones. If you play piano, you will know within about five minutes of looking at your accommodation options that the instrument is not coming with you. Halls of residence ban them almost universally. Student flats in most cities are not sized or structurally suited to take one. And even if you found a place that could accommodate it, dragging a piano across the country for three years and back again makes little sense.

The family home is not always the answer

The obvious solution is to leave the piano where it is. If it is already in the family home, it can just stay there while you are away. In theory that is fine. In practice, the conditions in a house that is occupied less, or heated differently now that a room is not being used, are not kind to a piano.

A spare room with no regular occupant is often the room where the heating gets turned down first. Temperature and humidity swings over a year are what do the most damage: the soundboard dries and can crack along the grain, tuning pins lose their grip in the pin block, the felt in the action hardens. A piano that was in good order when you left can come back noticeably worse after three years sitting in an unused room, even if nobody touched it.

If the family home itself is being downsized or sold while you are away, the problem is more immediate. The piano needs somewhere to go, and it needs to go properly.

Why a general self-store unit is not right for a piano

Self-storage facilities are designed for boxes, furniture and household goods. They are not climate-controlled in the way a musical instrument needs. Temperature and humidity in a standard unit follow whatever the weather is doing outside, modified only by the building around it. A piano held in those conditions for a year or more will feel the difference.

There is also the question of how the piano gets there. Self-storage units expect you to bring your own goods. A piano requires a specialist crew with the right equipment and proper preparation: wrapping, padding, the skill to lift and position it without damage. That is the work of people who do it for a living, not something to improvise.

How the booking works around a student timetable

You do not need to be at the property for the collection. If you have already moved to university, a parent, a sibling, a key holder or anyone you authorise can be present instead. Tell us who will give access when you book and we confirm the three-hour collection window directly with them.

The collection fee and the first four weeks are settled when you book. After that, a clear weekly rate continues in a rolling four-weekly cycle for as long as the piano needs to stay. If you extend your course, take a year abroad as part of your degree, or simply take longer to find the right place once you graduate, the piano stays in exactly the same conditions and the same rate continues. There is no penalty and no pressure.

If the piano is on an upper floor or there are stairs at the family home, note that when you book. Stair access is priced clearly before you confirm the booking, so the full cost is known in advance with no surprises on the day.

Re-delivery when you have your own place

Most students do not know where they will be living two or three years into the future. That does not matter. When you are settled and have an address that suits a piano, you book the re-delivery and we route it to the scheduled collection day for that area. If you are moving to a different part of the country from where you started, that is not a complication. We cover GB mainland and Belfast and the re-delivery address is entirely your choice.
