What piano insurance in storage really covers | PianoStorage
Insurance is usually the last thing people think to ask about when they book piano storage, and the first thing they wish they had asked if something goes wrong. The question itself is simple enough. The answer depends on who is holding the piano and on what terms.
Why home contents insurance usually does not help
Most home contents policies cover items at your named address. Once a piano leaves that address, the standard cover ends. Some policies extend to items temporarily away from home, but piano storage is rarely temporary in the sense those policies mean: a weekend away, or items in transit rather than an instrument held in a separate commercial facility for several months.
High-value instruments are often excluded from standard contents cover altogether, or subject to a sub-limit that would not begin to reflect the cost of repair or replacement for a reasonable upright, let alone a good quality grand. If your piano is listed separately on your home policy, check whether that listing continues to apply once the instrument is held off-site. In most cases it does not.
What specialist piano storage insurance covers
With specialist piano storage, the piano is held on full insurance from the moment the crew collects it to the moment it is re-delivered. That cover is not an optional extra or an upgrade. It applies throughout the period in storage, during both journeys, and is included as part of the service.
The cover is arranged specifically for piano and musical instrument transit and storage rather than adapted from a general goods-in-transit policy. This matters because the risks for a piano are not the same as for household goods. Impact damage, humidity-related damage, and the particular vulnerabilities of the soundboard, pinblock and action are all understood by a specialist insurer in a way that a general policy may not account for.
- Cover applies from the first moment of collection, not only once the piano reaches the facility
- The instrument is insured during the journey to the facility and again during re-delivery
- The policy is specific to musical instruments, not a general goods-in-transit adaptation
- No separate policy to arrange, manage or renew during the storage period
- Cover continues for as long as the piano is in storage, with no gap between billing periods
What specialist storage insurance does not cover
Full insurance is not limitless insurance. There are categories of damage that no storage policy will cover because they were not caused by the storage itself.
Pre-existing damage is the most common category. If the piano arrives with a crack in the soundboard, loose tuning pins, a broken key or a damaged pedal mechanism, the policy does not cover those faults. This is why the crew notes the instrument's condition at collection and why it is worth mentioning anything you are already aware of when you book. It protects both sides.
Mechanical deterioration is another area that falls outside storage cover. A piano that was difficult to regulate before collection will not be restored by time in storage, however good the conditions are. Strings that were already corroding, a pinblock that was already losing its grip, felt that was already wearing: these are pre-existing faults and are not claims against the storage policy. Climate-controlled conditions protect against further deterioration but do not reverse existing damage.
If you are arranging storage independently
Some people arrange their own space for a piano rather than using a specialist service. If that is your route, the insurance question requires more attention.
Self-storage facilities do not insure the contents of a unit. The responsibility falls entirely to you. A standard home contents policy is unlikely to extend to an instrument held at a commercial storage site. You would need a standalone musical instrument policy that explicitly covers off-site storage, confirms the storage address, and remains in force for the full period the piano is there.
When checking or arranging that policy, ask specifically: does the cover apply to the piano at a named off-site commercial storage address, for the full period of the arrangement, and does it extend to damage caused by humidity or temperature variation. A policy that covers accidental damage but not environmental damage may not protect what you most need to protect.
The time to check the policy is before the piano leaves the property, not after something happens.PianoStorage
How this works when you book with us
When you book piano storage through the Pianospeed Group, the piano is collected by a specialist piano crew, wrapped in fitted transit covers, and held in a climate-controlled facility. The instrument is logged against your booking, held on full insurance throughout, and re-delivered when you are ready. There is no period during which the piano is in our care but outside cover.
The billing starts at collection, with the first four weeks settled at booking and a clear weekly rate continuing from there. If the property has stairs or a narrow entrance, note it when you book: stair access is priced clearly in the booking before collection day so there are no surprises.
Is my piano insured while it is in specialist storage?
Yes. The instrument is held on full insurance from the moment the specialist piano crew collects it to the moment of re-delivery. The cover is arranged specifically for pianos and musical instruments, not adapted from a general goods policy, and it applies throughout the storage period without any gap between billing cycles.
Does my home contents insurance cover a piano in storage?
In most cases, no. Home contents policies cover items at your named address. Once the piano is held at a separate commercial facility, standard cover usually does not follow it. High-value instruments are often subject to sub-limits or exclusions even at home, and off-site cover is rarely extended without a specific endorsement. Check your policy wording carefully and, if in doubt, confirm in writing with your insurer.
What events does specialist piano storage insurance cover?
The policy covers the piano against damage and loss during collection, throughout its time in the climate-controlled facility, and during re-delivery. The cover is specific to pianos and musical instruments. Pre-existing damage and mechanical faults that were present before collection are not covered, which is why the crew notes the instrument's condition when they collect it.
What if my piano already has some damage before it goes into storage?
Mention it when you book. The crew will record the instrument's condition at collection. Pre-existing faults are not covered by the storage policy, but noting them at the outset ensures there is no dispute about when damage occurred. Climate-controlled conditions will protect against further deterioration, but will not repair damage that was already there.
If I put my piano in a self-storage unit, do I need separate insurance?
Yes. A self-storage facility does not insure what you put in the unit. You would need a standalone musical instrument policy that explicitly covers the piano at the named off-site address for the full period of storage. Ask specifically whether the policy covers environmental damage such as humidity or temperature variation, not only accidental physical damage.
Is the piano insured during collection and re-delivery as well as in the facility?
Yes. Cover applies from the moment the specialist piano crew collects the instrument at your property. It continues throughout the journey to the facility, for the full period in climate-controlled storage, and during re-delivery. There is no gap.
